Cosmo Mealing

In my practice I have been studying the subsequent relationships between man and nature, as well as exploring forms of duality and transformation. The inspirations that inform my work find there roots across multiple mediums like posthuman cinema, with films such as Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell to the surreal, transformative painters H.R. Giger, ZdzisÅ‚aw BeksiÅ„ski; the video works of Nam June Paki and the figurative sculptor Jacob Epstein.

I incorporate mixed media into my work, taking the form of drawing, video, photography and sculpture, normally while developing the same project. While I construct lots my sculpture from raw material, I do also regularly construct works from found objects. I like working that way as it not only recycles the items but also gives new meanings and relevance to the  pieces.

I studied post-humanism previously as a focal point for my dissertation, where I talked about the human body and its evolving relationship and possibly changes with technology. This duality caused me to think of my relationship with technology with led me to also explore my relation with nature, having grown up in London but also spending lots of time in the country has led me to enjoy both. Personally, I feel these dual experiences are one of the cornerstones of my practice.
